In Bengali grammar, proper usage of retroflex characters 'ণ' and 'ষ' is a fundamental requirement for scoring full marks in board exams and university entrance tests.
1. After ঋ, র, ষ: Always use 'ণ'
In Sanskrit loanwords (Tatsama), retroflex 'ণ' follows immediately after 'ঋ', 'র', and 'ষ'. Examples include:
- ঋণ, বর্ণ, কারণ, মরণ, ভাষণ.
2. Before retroflex stops (ট, ঠ, ড, ঢ)
Always use 'ণ' in consonant clusters preceding ট-varga sounds:
- ঘণ্টা, লণ্ঠন, কাণ্ড.
Important Rule: In native Bengali or foreign loanwords (English, Persian, Arabic), 'ণ' and 'ষ' are strictly prohibited. Always use 'ন' and 'স' instead (e.g. Station, Post, Glass).
